Dancing it off – making yourself a ‘happy’ playlist

This last week I was in a pretty weird, down mindset. I felt myself slipping into negative thoughts quite a lot, lacked motivation to get things done and all in all just a bit…meh. I’ve learned a lot of tactics to pull myself back out of these moods, having realised that I can quite easily (and quickly) slide into a darker place that’s much harder to shift if I don’t nip it in the bud.

If you’ve ever seen Grey’s Anatomy you’ll know they ‘dance it out’. At first glance it’s quite cringey and I appreciate this won’t work for everyone but it definitely works for me. So I have a happy playlist (where’s my Nobel prize?)

I add anything and everything to it that either makes me want to dance, reminds me of a happy time or just uplifts me. It’s got everything you could imagine from Disney songs (of course) to inspirational ones like Rise Up by Andra Day. There’s some really cringe pop, some Fall Out Boy and even musical numbers. It’s a complete mess of a playlist I’m not gonna lie.

But that’s the beauty of it. I know that there’s a load of songs on there that can provide me a mental break from whatever it is that’s getting me down, and it’ll lift me back up. Whether I need to feel inspired, or excited, or powerful, or silly, there’s something in there. Sometimes I don’t know what I need and I just shuffle it.

Music has so much power and this is such a simple and easy thing to do. You gotta go for it though, no fear of judgement, no embarrassment. Just dance around the house without a care in the world and trick your brain into feeling happy again
